The buildings where the Governor-General in the Commonwealth and British Empire reside are called Government Houses. It is here that official duties, receptions and functions are conducted. When members of the Royal Family visit a Commonwealth nation, the tradition is for them to be hosted at the Government House. The Government House in British Guiana was built in 1858. It was renamed to be the State House after Independence, and is the official residence of the President of Guyana. There were also some renovations and additions to this building during the years.
