The Public Buildings, Georgetown

The 'Public Buildings' or 'Government Buildings' was erected by the Dutch and handed over to the Court of Policy on 5th August 1834. It stands distinctly at the center of Stabroek (later renamed to be Demerara) as the administration center of the colony. The building was designed by architect Joseph Hadfield with a foundation of greenheart logs and built of brick with stuccoed Roman cement to resemble stone blocks. During the French occupation in 1782 the building was retained. Today the structure is known as Parliament Building. The image shows the Public Buildings in British Guiana.

Promenade Gardens Bandstand, Georgetown

The Bandstand in the Promenade Gardens was completed in 1897 and is the oldest of the three Bandstands in Georgetown. It was constructed to commemorate the 60th anniversary (Diamond Jubilee) of Queen Victoria. The Bandstand was used for civic functions that included live band music. Government House, Georgetown

The buildings where the Governor-General in the Commonwealth and British Empire reside are called Government Houses. It is here that official duties, receptions and functions are conducted. When members of the Royal Family visit a Commonwealth nation, the tradition is for them to be hosted at the Government House. The Government House in British Guiana was built in 1858. It was renamed to be the State House after Independence, and is the official residence of the President of Guyana. There were also some renovations and additions to this building during the years. The image shows the Government House of British Guiana.
