The Umana Yana was built as a VIP lounge and recreation center for the 1972 Conference of Foreign Ministers of Non-aligned countries. Umana Yana are Wai Wai words meaning "meeting place of the people". It was destroyed by fire on 2014-09-09 and was rebuilt to celebrate Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary on 2016-05-26.
