Classifying Plantation Names, British Guiana

The early settlers of British Guiana named their lands to celebrate, anticipate or commemorate events and things in their lives. Before 1740, only Dutch settlers could acquire land. But afterwards the territory was open to everyone who were free such as the British and French settlers. The names of the plantations reflect the mixture of cultures during that time. The image shows a classification of the plantation names into broad themes in 1948 British Guiana.
